Grading at Seven Oak is PROFICIENCY-BASED. This means that the practice your child does will amount to up to 20% of the grade. The more practice he/she does, the idea is that the actual tests/quizzes/assessments will count for about 80-90% of the grade.
Your child needs to do every assignment in order to get the practice they need in order to do well on the assessments. In my classes, any classwork, practice quizzes, and writing they do is "formative assessment" and counts for 20% of the grade. Any final essays they write and turn in and tests are 60% of the grade. In my class, they may always keep revising their writing until they get a better grade.
My social studies grades are based on classwork ("Practice") and quizzes ("formative assessment")--these assignments are worth up to 20 % of the grade. The tests (on terms, concepts, etc.) are "summative assessments" and will be worth up to 60% of the grade.
Projects will be formative or summative assessments. I use rubrics for writing, creative assignments, and other projects.
Sometimes I have optional assignments. Students can choose NOT to do an optional assignment. But they should in order to get practice and extra points. No student will be penalized for NOT doing an OPTIONAL assignment.
If you look in your student's planner, they should have the days when their next quizzes will be. Parents need to look at and sign student planners every night for my language arts classes. When they have a quiz coming up--even if it's days in advance--they need to be studying for that quiz EVERY NIGHT until the day of the quiz. Please help them study for quizzes at home by quizzing them on the concepts they need to know.
Finally, while this does not pertain to grades directly, students need practice reading at home. If your student struggles with reading, they will need to read at home. Please have them read to you and help them with unfamiliar words and their meanings. Together, student, parent, and teacher, can get them where they need to be!
