I came to Oregon five years ago from Las Vegas, NV where I taught high school English and mythology. Since then I have been a writing tutor and student advisor for the TRIO STEM program at Lane Community College, as well as a graduate student at the University of Oregon.
I guess I've wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in middle school. I used to pretend I had my own classroom and I would make my own lesson plans and teach imaginary students in my bedroom. When I got into high school, I vowed that no matter what career I got into, I swore to myself I would do whatever it took not to be in school anymore. And, yet...here I am. I couldn't stay away from education. I loved learning too much. I became a teacher mainly because I loved writing and I could do it well. I also found that I could teach pretty well to boot. So, it was only natural that I, after having tutored for AVID in California, UNLV, and CSUN in the early 21st century, I decided to pursue teaching as a major. While I was at UNLV in my bachelor's education program, I realized that the only way to create a decent and compassionate society was to begin with education. If I could teach children to read, write, to be nice, caring, compassionate, creative, and have a love for life and the planet we live on, I could help save the world. So, here we all are, kids. Trying to save the world. We--you, me, everyone--can do anything we set our minds and our hard work to. What do you want to do? |
