Semester TWO Announcement:
Seven Oak has been slowly moving to the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)model in regards to teaching students learning and organizational strategies. What does this mean? AVID is a nationwide school program that not only includes AVID elective classes geared toards moving kids into a college mindset, but schools that follow the AVID model adopt many of the strategies used in AVID elective classes.
So, in my class (with parent support), I have the following expectations of my students in this last semester:

So, in my class (with parent support), I have the following expectations of my students in this last semester:
- BINDERS: Every student has a binder (not broken) with a planner, pencil pouch (with PLENTY of pencils), fully-stocked with lined paper, and dividers with class labels. (Students can buy binders with a pencil pouch and dividers in the office for $5--or they can go to Walmart and get the supplies. Students may choose to "work" for a binder by helping in cafeteria, etc. See office staff for details.
- ****School work is not to be "shoved" into binders. All school work needs to go behind the appropriate divider. There should be a dedicated folder (or place in the binder) where ALL homework to be completed goes each night.
- PLANNERS: Every student will continue to write in their planner (topics of the day, homework assignments, and when tests and planned study time for tests will be). Parents need to continue to sign the bottom of the planners at LEAST three days a week. Many students are telling me they don't study for their tests--mostly because they don't even look at their planners when they get home. This is why I need parents to sign the planners at least three times a week.
- CORNELL NOTE TAKING: This is a note-taking system that AVID uses. It is effective in getting students to organize notes, create study sheets for tests, and it helps them reflect on concepts they need to practice with. It will mostly be these notes your student will be studying with (when it comes to my classes). Students may also need to study worksheets and classwork they may do on lined paper.
- The point of these three elements is that once they are successful in organization, planning, taking notes in this manner, and studying at home, they will have more tools in their academic tool box should they decide to go to college.
See videos below for explanations about Cornell Notes, the AVID binder, and what an AVID program can do for students---Even if a student does NOT get into an AVID elective class, they will still get these strategies in their other classes.
